Van Wilder is a film that wants to be a lot of different films at once. Our "hero", a sixth-year college student trying to trick his parents into a year seven, sounds like a cross between Ferris Bueller and Chris Knight (Real Genius), with a touch of Gord Brody (Freddy Got Fingered) thrown in for good measure. Wilder is a (cliché alert) party animal who doesn't want to give up the good life of college and go out into the real world. Color me cynical about the film, but I'll bet by the end that we'll see him grow into a man willing to graduate and move out into the world, maybe due in large part to the love of a good woman. Said love goddess is played by Tara Reid, who has followed up her surprising popularity in American Pie with Dr. T and the Women, Just Visiting, Josie and the Pussycats, and now this. Throw in the whole Carson Daly thing and it's about time for her to get a new agent who gives better career advice.

If you are looking for positives about the film, I really can't help you. The star is most famous as one of the two guys in Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place. It's up to you to figure out which guy he is. The director, Walt Becker, has yet to have a film released in theaters. The writers, Brent Goldberg and David Wagner, are the creative geniuses behind Saving Ryan's Privates. In short, we have an unknown lead, an unknown director, completely unproven writers and Tara Reid. If the trailer is great, this could all change but on paper, this looks like a dud. Van Wilder: Party Liason will now be called National Lampoon's Van Wilder and is currently slated for over 2,000 theaters nationwide. National Lampoon itself will be very involved in the marketing of the Artisan film, including the usage of Nationallampoon.com as the Van Wilder's official Web site. (Kim Hollis/BOP)

The release has been pushed back one week from March 29th to February 5th. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
