50/50

50/50 is about a young man who learns he has cancer, a premise that immediately triggers inevitable plot developments. Here's what I anticipated prior to seeing the movie: the young man will change physically; he'll go through a series of emotional stages like denial, sadness, anger and eventually acceptance; he'll befriend other cancer patients who provide him valuable insights into life, the disease and himself; he'll find redemption through suffering and empathy; and someone will die.

Yes, 50/50 is traditional in many ways, but in spite of that, its dialogue and performances are rich, genuine and down-to-earth, and they help keep the movie grounded and believable even though we know where it's going. Call this a touching human drama with no real surprises.

The patient's name is Adam (Josh Gordon-Levitt), a 27-year-old who works for Seattle Public Radio alongside his best friend from high school, Kyle (Seth Rogen). Adam is quiet, harmless and pleasant. He jogs, never smokes or drinks, and he makes it a point to tell his doctor he recycles. That's why he's so surprised to learn his back pains are being caused by a tumor growing on his spine. He has what Kyle refers to as “back cancer.” The technical term is neurofibroma sarcoma schwannoma, but it's easier to just say “back cancer.”

Although Adam is shocked to hear the news, he remains calm. Less worried is his self-centered girlfriend, Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard), who says she'll take care of him, but there's just something in her eyes that makes you not believe her. Most of the worrying is handled by Adam's mother, played by Anjelica Huston, who couldn't be more perfectly cast. She's already got her hands full with Adam's father (Serge Houde), who's battling Alzheimer's disease.
