Planet Terror

Since Planet Terror, Robert Rodriguez has been attached to various projects, only for nothing to happen, be it the Barbarella remake or Machete, inspired by the fake trailer that opened Planet Terror. Maybe we'll never see a Sin City sequel. His latest is a project that's also been hinted at for almost a decade.

Bob Weinstein made the announcement that Rodriguez has hooked up with Dimension Films again, to write and direct the futuristic action thriller Nerveracker (now without the plural ‘S'- maybe they've got sequel potential in mind, a-la Alien / Aliens style).

Set in the year 2085, we follow Joe Tezca, who is part of an elite unit sent in to stop a crime wave amongst a perfect futuristic society. In doing so he finds that “Nerverackers” are trying to take control of the city. At the moment it's not really revealed what these “Nerverackers” do exactly and what makes them so different to warrant such an annoyingly cool name. Still, Tezca carries on with his mission like a good boy, and attempts to stop the “Nerverackers” before they turn the city into Abu Ghraib.

“This is one of those projects that we dreamed about making for years, and now the timing is right to finally do it,” says Rodriguez. Who knows why the hell they've been waiting so long. Maybe the special effects are so outrageous that the technology is now considered to be finally up to the task. Or maybe Rodriguez has just been too busy seeing what else he can stick into Rose McGowan besides a machine gun (I don't blame him).

Bob Weinstein founded Dimension Films in 1992 as an alternate label for genre releases, and Rodriguez has been a big contributor to its success. His Spy Kids trilogy pulled in a combined total of over $300 million in the US (add foreign totals and it's a worldwide gross of $460 million); and Sin City took $74 million in the US, reaching over $150 worldwide. Nerverackers could be his next Blade Runner...or the next Babylon A.D. (Shalimar Sahota/BOP)

When last we saw Tommy Lee Jones, he was playing the grizzled military/government/police veteran in The Hunted, Men in Black, Space Cowboys, Rules of Engagement, The Fugitive and, well, pretty much every non-Batman movie of his in the last 15 years. In Man of the House, he plays a totally different sort of character...an FBI Agent.

Okay, he might be the world's foremost example of typecasting (Ashley Judd excluded), but hey. Tommy Lee Jones is cool. If he gets off on playing The Man, I say we let him and be grateful to watch him work.

Man of the House is ever so slightly different from his normal grizzled veteran efforts in that it's a comedy. Err, a comedy that is certified 100% Will Smith free. In this outing, Jones portrays an agent who must protect a group of cheerleaders. That's right. Cheerleaders.

Apparently, the girls were walking off the stage after a cheer-off and accidentally witnessed a backstage murder. The criminals who perpetrated the slaying don't like that there are hot teen girls out there who can finger them for the crime. Jones is forced to go undercover as the pep squad's assistant coach in order to secure their protection.

Along the way, comic hijinks ensue as the man old enough to be the girls' great-grandfather learns the true meaning of generation gap. Times three.

Equal parts Bring It On, Miss Congeniality and The Hunted, Man of the House looks to capitalize on the comedic chops Jones demonstrated in the mega-blockbusters Men in Black, Men in Black II and Batman Forever. (David Mumpower/BOP)

For their tentpole summer 2006 release, Warner Bros is hoping that the return of one of the classic disaster films of all time will create a 90-foot tidal wave of cash. Everyone put on your life jacket as The Poseidon Adventure is back. And it's back with a vengeance.

Thought by many to be the grand-daddy of all disaster flicks, The Poseidon Adventure begins as just another New Year's Eve cruise on a top-heavy ocean liner. One 90-foot tsunami-like tidal wave later and we have a handful of survivors now racing the clock through an upside down maze of a ship hoping to find some way out before the ship sinks completely. The original film, made in 1972 by Ronald Neame from the novel by Paul Gallico, took critics and movie-goers by storm, earning eight Academy Awards nominations and winning the Best Song Oscar as well as a Special Oscar for the Effects. The original featured one of the great ensemble casts of all time. Gene Hackman led the group, with supporting turns by Ernest Borgnine, Shelley Winters (Academy Award nominee, Best Supporting Actress), Red Buttons, Roddy McDowell, Jack Albertson and a pre-Frank Drebin Leslie Nielsen as The Captain.

For those not familiar with the original, when you watch a film like Twister, The Perfect Storm, Volcano or any of the myriad of TV disaster movies, you can bet that there are scenes and cliches stolen straight out of The Poseidon Adventure.

Moving on to the new version, Wolfgang Petersen is attached to the project as a producer, though there are currently conflicting reports about him directing. Also, cast signings include Kurt Russell, Richard Dreyfuss and Emmy Rossum, which looks to be setting in motion a pretty stellar starring group. Petersen knows a thing or two about the sea as he's helmed both The Perfect Storm and Das Boot. He also knows a thing or two about huge special effects, with The Perfect Storm grabbing an Oscar nod for effects in 2001.

To put it bluntly, there's not much that could cause this ocean liner to be a disaster at the box office. Well, except for maybe one thing. Apparently, NBC has picked up a version of the Poseidon Adventure and plans to air it on the Hallmark Channel. Since it's in post-production, they'll be able to air well before the theatrical version is ready. As a huge fan of the film, you can bet I'll be staying on top of this one and will update this page as soon as I have any information at all. (Jim Van Nest/BOP)

Post Grad

Gilmore Girl Alexis Bledel (other credits include Sin City and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) stars in Post Grad as Ryden Malby, a recent college graduate who helicopters her way back home with her family. She's stuck in her life that seems to be going nowhere fast. She's in search of a job, and a guy, or at least maybe some clue about where her life may be going. Her wacky family includes Michael Keaton (The Dream Team, Jack Frost) as dad, Jane Lynch (The 40 Year-Old Virgin, Talladega Nights) as mom, and the multi-talented showbiz legend Carol Burnett as grandma. Very interesting. Not sure how many younger folks will know exactly who Burnett is, but it would be hard to top the casting for this family. Rounding out her life are Rodrigo Santoro (300, Che: Part One and Two) as the hot guy next door, and Zach Gilford as her best friend (and eventual love interest, perhaps, or would that be too formulaic?).

Some person you've likely never heard of directs the movie - Vicky Jenson. Bet you had no idea she was a co-director of the first Shrek movie (along with something named Andrew Adamson). Now you can impress your friends at the next cocktail party.

The movie has undergone several name changes along the way including Ticket to Ride and The Post Grad Survival Guide, before settling on the simpler title Post Grad. Whether that forebodes anything for the movie's quality I don't yet know, but it could at least be a sign that the suits are struggling trying to figure out the best way to sell the movie. The first trailer was rather middling, but admittedly, I am not in the target audience. Box office anywhere in the neighborhood of Sisterhood's $39 million domestic gross would be a win for this relatively low cost comedy with a budget of just about $15 million. (Michael Bentley/BOP)

Postal

The not-so-revered Uwe Boll went wild in June 2006. At that time, the director's production company issued a press release stating that Boll would go toe-to-toe in five separate boxing matches against his harshest critics. Three months later, Boll fought and won against five of his biggest haters, including Ain't it Cool News writer Jeff Sneider and Rue Morgue magazine writer Chris Alexander.

Sounds mad. But then again, why not? Time and time again, the critics hate his work (literally). His latest films â€" with Boll at the helm as director â€" are remakes of horror video games, including House of the Dead in 2003, Alone in the Dark in 2005 and BloodRayne in 2006. Critically and financially, the three flatlined. House of the Dead earned $10,199,354 and was liked by just 4% of critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes. BloodRayne, starring Ben Kingsley, Michelle Rodriguez and, sadly, Meatloaf, grossed just $2,405,420. Again, it was liked by 4% of critics.

But the granddaddy of them all is Alone in the Dark. Though it earned a bit more than BloodRayne at a still unimpressive $5,178,569, just one critic â€" out of 114 â€" gave the Christian Slater/Tara Reid project a positive review. (Shame on you, Eclipse Magazine's Michelle Alexandria!)

Taking a break from the horror genre â€" though Bloodrayne II: Deliverance, Bloodrayne 3: Warhammer and Alone in the Dark II are shamefully in the works â€" Boll's next feature is the crude comedy Postal, based on the 1997 shoot 'em up videogame of the same name.

The film, which aims to push the envelope on political, moral and social correctness â€" a la South Park â€" stars Zack Ward as Dude, an unemployed lowlife who is one day inspired to get his life back on track. So, he gets involved in a criminal scheme with his uncle Dave (Dave Foley), which calls for stealing and reselling OKrotch-y Dolls, a must-have kids toy. (Think Tickle Me Elmo in 1996 and Furby in 1998).

Outside of Foley and Verne Troyer, who cameos as himself, Postal's cast is filled with unknowns. This doesn't mean, however, that audiences will be unfamiliar with some of the lead characters, including comedic portrayals of Osama bin Laden and George W. Bush. Other characters include Azeem, Cooter and Retarded Taliban.

Either way, something tells me those unprecedented boxing matches will do little to increase Postal's number of positive reviews. (Eric Hughes/BOP)

Portia is a gorgeous woman of the court, with wealth galore and virtue true. She is the heiress of Belmont, and as such, it is only seeming that someone within her station would woo her. Therefore, Bassanio, who is hoping to win her affections, believes that he has literally no hope of succeeding without adequate money. Alas, he is penniless, and so he asks his friend Antonio to lend him 3,000 ducats. Though Antonio would like to help his friend, his money is all tied up in shipping. Thus, Antonio approaches the Jewish moneylender Shylock for a loan.

Nothing can be simple, of course. Shylock and Antonio hate each other, and Antonio cannot abide usury. He wants to assist Bassanio in his quest, though, and surprisingly Shylock agrees to make the loan without charging interest. Instead, he suggests that Antonio will sign a bond that will allow Shylock to cut a pound of flesh from Antonio's body if the loan is not repaid within three months. Antonio doesn't see this as a problem; he is certain that at least one of his ships will be returning in the near short-term. He signs the bond and gives the money to Bassanio, who immediately leaves for Belmont with his friend Gratiano.

When he arrives, Bassanio is informed about a test that Portia's late father left for any man who wished to court her. The suitors have to choose from a gold, silver or lead chest, and if they find Portia's portrait inside, she will become that man's bride. Portia is thrilled to see that Bassanio is successful, and she gives him a ring as a symbol of her love. He promises to wear it forever. Meanwhile, Portia's maid Nerissa has fallen for Bassanio's friend Gratiano, and she gives him a ring as a token of her esteem.

Gratiano isn't the only one of Bassanio's friends in Belmont. Lorenzo has also just arrived in the city with his new bride Jessica. Coincidentally, Jessica is the daughter of Shylock, and she has deserted her father and eloped with Lorenzo, who is not Jewish but Christian.

It's not long before our heroes receive word that none of Antonio's ships have arrived in time for him to repay his loan to Shylock, who is additionally furious about his daughter's betrayal. He has appealed to the justice of the Venetian court that he should receive his pound of flesh from Antonio. Bassanio and Gratiano leave with all haste to return to Venice and help their friend.

The resourceful Portia has her own clever scheme. She disguises herself as a lawyer and brings Nerissa along to pose as her clerk. She arrives at Antonio's trial just in the nick of time. Things aren't going well for Antonio, and she appeals to Shylock with a speech about mercy:

It is an attribute to God himself,
And earthly power doth then show likest God's
When mercy seasons justice.

Though powerful, her words do nothing to sway Shylock, so Portia goes for a different approach. She awards Shylock the pound of flesh and commands Antonio to bare his chest. She stipulates, however, that Shylock must take exactly one pound of flesh - no more, no less. Furthermore, he must not spill one drop of blood. If he fails to collect his prize in accordance with these rules, he'll be put to death. Shylock gives up the fight.

It's not over yet, though. Portia points out the fact that Shylock is actually liable to have his property confiscated and that he is still eligible for execution by the Venetian state because he plotted the death of a Venetian citizen. In the end, it is agreed that Shylock will be allowed to live and that Venice will merely fine him for his crime. Antonio is awarded the use of half of Shylock's wealth, which he does not take. He instead stipulates that it should be awarded to Lorenzo in the event of Shylock's death. Antonio also demands that Shylock must become a Christian.

Before Portia and Nerissa return to Belmont, they demand that Bassanio and Gratiano give them their rings as tokens of gratitude. Reluctantly, the two young men agree. The ladies then rush back to Belmont to arrive ahead of their husbands. When Bassanio and Gratiano arrive, Portia and Nerissa deny their love to the men until they can prove the rings were not given to other women. The women stop teasing the men after a bit, and tell them the story of what happened. Word soon arrives that three of Antonio's rich cargo vessels have arrived, and everyone lives happily ever after…except Shylock.

Seeing this classic, flawed Shakespearian tale adapted for a modern audience should be fascinating. With Al Pacino as the villainous Shylock and former Shakespeare Joseph Fiennes as Bassanio, the cast is solid. Sony Pictures Classics has picked up the film for North American distribution, and looks to be considering the film as part of its award-contending slate for late 2004. (Kim Hollis/BOP)

You may think you have it rough. Perhaps your rent is late, your dog is sick and your girlfriend is a Twilight fan. Claireece “Precious” Jones thinks you've got it great…except for the Twilight thing. Compare your life to hers and you'll have to agree with her point of view. At the age of 16, this poor girl has already been pregnant twice. And that's not even the worst part. Her father is the…well, father. Now there is an awkward conversation with junior. “Your daddy is also your granddaddy.” Three words: Maury Povich Show.

Precious as a story is somehow rather uplifting despite the above. Author Sapphire (one name only) worked as a literacy teacher for several years and wanted to write a composite story about a group of people she felt had been largely abandoned by the American dream. That series of women was represented by the character Precious, a well intended woman who has never been given a real chance in life.

Despite her impending motherhood for a second time, Precious is forced to go to an impassionate school that takes no heed of the fact that she is a functional illiterate. Seeking to improve their reputation, facilitators at her school try to kick her out by convincing her to enter a GED program. This callous disregard for her well being proves to be the best break of girl's young life as the program includes several other women who have faced similar challenges in life. Precious meets other victims of sexual abuse and other parental misconduct as well as a couple of caring educators who take pride in helping such victims gain the basic skill set they need to succeed in life. As Precious learns to read, she develops confidence in herself and becomes more attuned to the problematic environment in which she lives. Particularly difficult for her are her relationships with her drug addicted, rapist father and her psychologically abusive mother, a shut-in whose only pleasure seems to come from belittling Precious. The teen begins to debate the best way to raise her child as well take care of herself and her journey to self-help is the primary arc of the story.

Precious won the Grand Jury Prize as well as the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival. Comedian Mo'Nique was given a Special Jury Award as well, making her an early contender for Best Supporting Actress at the 2010 Oscars. In addition - and I can't believe I am typing this - Mariah Carey is receiving heaps of praise for her performance as a helpful social worker. Also along for the ride is Lenny Kravitz. Yes, folks, a film featuring Mo'Nique, Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz is absolutely tearing up the film festival circuit. Perhaps the only recognizable actress in the cast is Paula Patton, who is best known for her roles in Idlewild and Déjà Vu. The real star of the film, however, is Gabby Sidibe, who plays the titular lead. Her work is described as nothing short of mesmerizing and she could find herself in the same position Saoirse Ronan was in two years ago as a legitimate Oscar contender for her performance as a troubled teen (though Sidibe was actually born in 1983).

The specificity of the title is a story unto itself. The movie was originally given an assignation that separated it from the Sapphire novel. Once a decision was made to embrace the connection as much as possible, another title had already claimed the name of Push. There is also some debate over the rights of the film, akin to the Watchmen debacle in 2008. Weinstein Co. sued the distributor who championed it at the Sundance Film Festival, Lionsgate Films, over ownership and future revenue. As of this publication date, that situation remains unresolved. Whether this becomes an issue remains to be seen, but Precious has quietly become one of the major players in the 2009 Academy Awards season. (David Mumpower/BOP)

Predators: FREE Download Links!

The vast and mighty sea of the Cinematic Reboot strikes us once again. Looking at the release schedule for 2010, you could be forgiven for thinking you've gone Back to the Future and right into the 1980s.

To be fair, Robert Rodriguez's Predators can certainly be taken as a sequel. After all, by applying the plural form to Predator, it's obviously emulating the Aliens (1986) - Alien (1979) situation, and the plot almost certainly will not pit the alien hunter of the title against a batch of jungle commandos, as the first film did. But it still has that "Re-" air about it. Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that. After all, some of my best friends are reboots.

The Predator series itself has an interesting history. It began essentially as a successful Arnold Schwarzenegger summer vehicle in 1987; in grossing $59 million, it became Arnie's highest box office score up until then (Twins obliterated that the next year). Arnold turned down the sequel, and what Predator 2 ended up as was a noisy, early '90s-style action film that got lost in the Christmas season of 1990. The $30 million domestic gross was a downer considering the $35 million budget, and so that was that for the Predator franchise. Life went on as before.

Ah, but there were a few things no one following this storyline could have predicted: the popularization of the internet in the 1990s, the massive box office of Star Wars: Episode I in 1999, and the subsequent transformation of the summer movie season into a series of wish-fulfilment projects geared at the fanboys who drooled over the now-iconic sci-fi and horror characters introduced in the decades before. The subjects of thousands of 1990s message board posts were becoming cinematic reality one by one in the 2000s, and Freddy vs. Jason was the first film to actively pit two fanboy favorites against each other. That one opened to $36 million and finished with $82 million in August 2003, and thus the door was opened for the equally long-awaited Alien vs. Predator, matching up the two aliens from Twentieth Century Fox. That one grossed a fair $80 million in August 2004, and the inevitable sequel, this time with a more respectable MPAA rating - "R" - gobbled up $41 million in December 2007. That's OK, but it's not a whole lot of money, and so the door seemed shut on the Predator series once again.

But isn't it interesting how this franchise lives on by latching onto the movie trends of the day? By the late 2000s, the above-mentioned reboot mania had come into play, and so we arrive at this project, and back to the beginning. 20th Century Fox seems to be taking this one very seriously, and in putting genre stalwart Rodriguez behind the camera, they're obviously hoping for the franchise to receive a much-needed doze of Rodriguez's unique style. That's reflected in naming the film "Robert Rodriguez's Predators", at least upon inception. Rodriguez is coming off a failure of sorts with his 50-50 participation in Grindhouse (2007), and 2009's Shorts sounds like another entry in his family film cannon, so he's ripe to get into a big-budget special effects movie. I'd say that the AvP films are too recent, however, for this to feel quite as fresh and untinted as a few other recent reboots did.

If Rodriguez's Predators makes $100 million, something with "Alien" in the title will be hitting screens in 2011. And I'll have another reboot to complain about. (Michael Lynderey/BOP)

Sundance 2004 got an early start this year as Lions Gate Films jumped the gun a bit in acquiring Saw even before the festival began. Like Open Water, the other wildly popular horror film at the festival, Saw proved to be an instant hit with prospective distributors. In the end, the film's production company, Evolution Management picked Lions Gate because of their recent track record. Low budget horror films such as House of 1000 Corpses and Cabin Fever fared well thanks to the nurturing of the rising distributor. Evolution spokesman Oren Koules also noted the handling of the upcoming High Tension as being key to their decision making.

What is it about Saw that makes the movie so popular with potential suitors? The story.

Saw plays upon the lurking fear that all of us try to keep pushed beneath the surface. It tells the stories of Dr. Lawrence Gordon and his newly-discovered companion, Adam. The latter gentleman has recently survived a near-death experience at the bottom a filthy bathtub. When Adam wakes up, he quickly realizes that his situation is not greatly improved.

Comfortably resting between Adam and the doctor is a blood-soaked corpse. Judging from the gun in the hand and the bullet hole in the brain, the former human has apparently committed suicide. The two survivors would like to do their best CSI and investigate further. Alas, both of them are frightened to discover they are chained to a wall.

You might be inclined to believe their predicament could not possibly grow more perilous. You would be wrong in that assumption. Lawrence and Adam find out that their capturer is the illustrious Jigsaw, a homicidal maniac so designated because of the way he marks his territory so to speak. The slayer has gained this moniker because of the way he brands his victims in the pattern of a jigsaw puzzle piece. It's the killer's way of taunting the cops while taking credit for the crime.

Summarizing, Adam and Doc Gordon awaken to find themselves chained to a wall. A corpse is the third member of the group. The captor is a serial killer who relishes taunting the police with the details of his many crimes. I know two fellows who are going to need a lot of therapy if they manage to survive all this.

Saw is something of a combination of Cube and The Bourne Identity. The prisoners awaken to a terrifying predicament but are armed with no memory of how they got to be here. If the duo is unable to work together quickly and effectively, that's the ballgame.

In addition to the killer (no pun intended) premise, Saw also offers some strong acting talent. Dr Lawrence Gordon is played by the Dread Pirate Roberts himself, Cary Elwes. Adam is played by virtual unknown Leigh Whanell. His presence is explained by the fact that he wrote the screenplay. That's one way to avoid the casting couch. Mr. Too Old for This Danny Glover, Starship Troopers vixen Dina Meyer and It Girl class of 1998 Monica Potter also co-star. (David Mumpower/BOP)

Imagine for a moment that you are a prince. Heir to the throne, you spend your entire life training for that inevitable moment when you ascend to the crown, thereby becoming the (hopefully) benevolent ruler of your people.

One day while out adventuring (you have to kill the time some way, right?), you accidentally uncover an artifact that holds the power of time itself. Using the sands within the device, you are now able to bend the very fabric of time and space to your will. It's good to be the king.

In yarns like this, such power always holds a downside. In this instance, there is a despot who is unhappy that you have the audacity to have discovered said artifact before his henchmen could. He swears to commit any act of atrocity needed to gain possession of the relic that holds the power of time. Once he has it, you know he won't stop there, either. If Disney movies have taught us nothing else, it's that evil tyrants won't rest until they have either enslaved or destroyed humanity. In this case, your new mortal enemy falls into the latter category.

Sure, it sounds rough, but did I mention you also have a beautiful princess assisting you in your journey? Hey, who knows... The two of you might even fall in love and make beautiful heirs to the throne together.

Unlike the slew of other videogame based movies being thrown together these days, Prince of Persia has a pedigree to it. Jerry Bruckheimer, last seen counting all his hundred dollar bills after Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, seeks to use that movie's blockbuster success as a stepping stone for this adaptation. As with Pirates, Bruckheimer wants to make a movie that doesn't isn't completely true to the videogame storyline but insteads harbors its own mythology with regards to the characters and plot. The movie industry's most successful producer envisions the Prince as a ninth century Indiana Jones, so the expectation is for the swashbuckling to be played up much more than in the action and trap-based videogame. Project X

Found footage movies are all the rage for one simple reason. They're dirt cheap to produce. Since audiences continue to support them, found footage films are the closest thing to box office arbitrage that exists in Hollywood these days. Project X is the latest of these and also one of the cleverest in terms of concept.

All of us have that fantasy as teenagers that we will throw the ultimate party, the one that will become a local legend for years to come. Project X is that premise come to (fictional) life as a bunch of unpopular teens celebrate a birthday by advertising a party on Craigslist. The results are predictable as strangers from miles away arrive and overwhelm a single home.

There isn't much to the plot here nor will a film created for $12 million involve any known stars. That's the point. This is a decidedly low budget affair intended to create a hashtag buzz. It is all but impossible to lose money and will probably prove to be one of the strongest returns on investment of all 2012 releases. (David Mumpower/BOP)

Visionary director Terry Gilliam brings to the screen a tale of a young girl left to her own devices who deals with the world as best she can.

Tideland tells the story of Jeliza-Rose, whose mother has died from a drug overdose and whose father, a former rockabilly guitarist, withdraws from life and from his daughter in the aftermath of his wife's tragic death. Moved by her father to her mother's childhood home in the country, Jeliza-Rose makes the world over into a fantasyland where bodiless Barbie doll heads talk, fireflies have proper names, bog-men prowl the land at dusk, sharks swim along the railroad tracks, and something is making awful noises in the attic. Besides the creatures that inhabit her fantasy world, Jeliza-Rose has found a human friend to keep her company, a neighbor woman called Dell who lives her life shrouded behind a beekeeper's veil.

Tideland is a story of loss and survival, of using fantasy to make sense of an often-too-harsh world, of keeping hold of the best of childhood whilst still learning to deal with the trials that life presents on the path to the future. Brought to life by Terry Gilliam, a director who has shown an amazing ability to blend fantasy and reality in equal measures to create a film world that both entrances and delves into the deeper emotions that exist at the heart of the best movies. Gilliam has consistently been able to exist outside the sometimes too-restrictive Hollywood studio system and keep his film visions pure, and whether you love or hate Gilliam - and there doesn't seem to be any between-ground in opinion - it is difficult to deny that Gilliam is a filmmaker of rare insight and commitment to his filmic themes. Tideland promises to be yet another ripping great yarn from this distinctive auteur, and is definitely a project to keep on the radar for all those who enjoy unique movies that eschew the cookie-cutter, safe Hollywood path for the cinematic road less traveled. Download Punisher War Zone free

Some comic books have self-explanatory premises. There is a Wonder Woman, a Superman, an Iron Man and (apparently) a Punisher. That last guy likes to punish people. Like I said, it's right there in the title how he spends his days. He's like a career hockey goon but with better artillery than a curved stick.

In 2004, Marvel Studios - in conjunction with Lionsgate - created a movie about this character starring Thomas Jane. The results were disappointing. Despite affording viewers the opportunity to see John Travolta get his ass kicked on camera, viewers paid the Punisher little attention. The $33 million production earned only $33.7 million worth of receipts. Apparently, a man clad in a skull-and-crossbones t-shirt is not that much of a draw sans the right marketing strategy. This should have been the end of the story for The Punisher as a movie concept.

Over the past couple of years, Marvel Studios has decided to finance their own productions. The idea is that they eliminate the dreaded studio notes that wind up stripping good ideas out of movies, making them the most generic output possible. Marvel has always prized the Punisher as a character, feeling that he is a darker take on the idea of DC's Batman: a bringer of vengeance with the principal difference being that he will take a life, unlike his DC counterpart. Action heroes like this are always en vogue, particularly on the home video market. In fact, it was primarily DVD sales of the original that drove Marvel to do another Punisher movie. People weren't willing to pay to see it in theaters, but they were willing to give it a chance at home.

So, Marvel requested a script from Kurt Sutter of The Shield in 2007. Over the three years prior to that, Thomas Jane had been telling fans of the comic books that another movie was in the works and that he would be once more portraying the lead. After Sutter's screenplay was submitted, Jane's tone changed. Indicating dissatisfaction with the production delays and the quality of the shooting script, the actor dropped out of the project. Almost immediately afterward (suspiciously quickly, in fact), Ray Stevenson aka Titus Pullo from HBO's Rome was brought onboard in the title role.

Marvel announced that the new Punisher movie would have nothing to do with the previous entry. Rather than create a sequel, they would do exactly the same thing as was done with The Hulk/The Incredible Hulk. They would acknowledge a previous mistake and move on. Dominic West of 300 was added to the cast as the principal villain, Jigsaw, Hooligans director and accomplished martial interest Lexi Alexander was hired to direct, and all the pieces seemed to be in place for a quiet shoot. After filming ended, however, Sutter requested that his name be removed from the writing credits, claiming that the movie Alexander filmed bore little resemblance to the one he wrote. A script Thomas Jane hadn't felt was up to snuff had been butchered to the point that its own writer wanted nothing to do with it. That's probably not a good sign.

BOP's staff loves Titus Pullo and we think his presence in a violent action film could be glorious. We also love Dominic West from The Wire and believe him to be a potentially great villain. We just worry about the fact that The Punisher was not a good movie yet its star found this script lacking. Then, the guy who wrote said script washed his hands of it. And oh yeah, the movie was delayed three months to December, not exactly the best time to be releasing a film whose body count may reach Nakatomi Building levels. We have no idea exactly what is going on with Punisher: War Zone, but we are starting to get a bad feeling about it. (David Mumpower/BOP)

Sorry, Matchbox 20 fans, this is not a concert movie of your favorite band. Even worse, it's a Dakota Fanning film. Yes, that's right. Little Miss Creepy is back for another production wherein she portrays a preternaturally mature girl. Even the Blair Witch is scared of Dakota Fanning.

The story this time involves a group of powerful people who have developed specialized telekinetic and clairvoyant abilities. Fearing the way they were being used by the government, this troop has re-located in Hong Kong. When a secret American organization identifies the current whereabouts of the ex-patriots, they embark upon a mission to retrieve the previously lost military assets. The psionic specialists have no choice but to defend themselves against the invaders.

In addition to Fanning, the rest of the cast of Push is quite good. Chris Evans, the best part of the Fantastic Four movies, is the lead actor here. Camilla Belle of When a Stranger Calls and 10,000 B.C. is his co-lead and, presumably, love interest. Two-time Academy Award nominee Djimon Hounsou is the most accredited member of the cast. Also featured are Joel Gretsch (Tom Baldwin on The 4400) and Maggie Siff (Rachel Mencken on Mad Men). Push is directed by Paul McGuigan, whose offered consecutive excellent outings with Lucky Number Slevin and Wicker Park. (David Mumpower/BOP)

The Blair Witch Project, for better or for worse, fundamentally altered the nature of filmmaking for some. The usage of shaky camerawork to engage the viewer as if they were a part of the story allowed for a type of invasive storytelling in what had been an artificial climate previously. Films such as Open Water and Doom have used the idea of unique camera perspectives to draw the viewer into the movie's world. Perhaps no title is more well known for accomplishing this than Cloverfield, the $46.1 million opener whose clever marketing campaign of viral videos turned it into the rarest of rare January blockbuster. Sony Pictures now seeks to duplicate the success Paramount experienced with that production by offering a release with a similar implementation.

A re-make of the 2007 Spanish movie, [Rec], Quarantine is filmed in the same first person perspective as Cloverfield. Just as was the case then, the cameraman is a member of the cast who occasionally will drop the fourth wall and become a part of the proceedings. The premise of [Rec] as well as Quarantine is simple. An emergency medical outbreak occurs in an apartment building, so the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC for short) quarantines the area. This is bad news for ambitious reporter Angela and her film crew. They find themselves live on the scene in order to get a scoop about the curious behavior being demonstrated by one of the residents. The problem is that once the government locks down the building, they are stuck inside. And that curious behavior, well it sure seems a lot like the sort of activity last seen on camera in 28 Days Later.

Angela is startled upon encountering a now-deformed tenant who hisses at her before aggressively attempting to take out the film crew. Simultaneously, the people outside the building unearth the truth about the cause of the disaster and how it impacts not only the people inside but also the unlucky pets at a veterinary clinic. The end result is that Angela and her trusty crew are trapped on the wrong side of the wall, and they must fight for lives as they attempt to survive an outbreak of infected residents who seem to have it in for all other living creatures.

Quarantine as a film project is rather straightforward. As was the case with Cloverfield, however, the marketing for the movie has been anything but. A pair of viral videos was released in March that allegedly chronicled an incident, Case 1017. Originally leaked as real life events, they were later confirmed as a hoax, an attempt to build up the awareness for Quarantine. Shady though the practice may be, the reality is that it gave several million views worth of free marketing to the project. And given the way that Cloverfield absolutely tore up the box office on its opening weekend, taking a page out of its advertising playbook is quite savvy. Despite having no one legitimately famous in the cast (the biggest names are Jennifer Carpenter, who plays Dexter's sister on Dexter, Columbus Short of Stomp the Yard and Steve Harris of The Practice), Quarantine is poised to be a stellar performer, at least at the start. In 1975, Disney introduced the world to the glory of Kim Richards. This child actress was the star of Escape to Witch Mountain, a genteel Disney action story about alien siblings on the run. The film was a success and it spawned a sequel, Return from Witch Mountain, in 1978, the movie that secured my crush on her until 1985 when she showed her boobies in Tuff Turf. The trade-off of innocence for hubba hubba chestiness did wonders for my pubescence, but it was probably the beginning of the end of her film career. Richards was almost completely absent from Hollywood releases again until 2007's Black Snake Moan. In fact, her main claim to fame these days is that her niece is Skank Hall of Famer Paris Hilton. Meanwhile, Disney has been spending the past 25 years lamenting their lost 1970s franchise.

These days, anything that was popular in the 1970s gets re-imagined, so it was only a matter of time before the Witch Mountain constellation returned to Hollywood orbit. And finally, The Rock has come back to Disney for another family-friendly outing. Okay, it hasn't been that long since The Game Plan was a surprise $90 million hit for the studio. It was also only a matter of time before he performed another role wherein his blend of good-natured charm and machismo catchphrases blended well with Disney's next surefire hit storyline. Anyone who has seen the trailer knows that he's perfectly cast as the unlucky cab driver who gives aliens teens a ride, only to be dragged into their police chase. Will the kids manage to get to Witch Mountain before the government intercedes? Of course. It's a Disney film. Even so, Race to Witch Mountain may not offer any surprises, but it should prove to be a feel good hit that approaches or perhaps even surpasses the box office of The Game Plan. (David Mumpower/BOP)

Rambo I: First Blood Download free

Last year, Sylvester Stallone resurrected his most timeless character in the well-received Rocky Balboa. Critics and audiences were pleased because Stallone, as writer and director, took a humble, sincere approach to an age-old icon and fans couldn't help but cheer.

In early 2008, Stallone brings his other famous character back to theaters, but he's a far cry from the sensitive, good-natured Rocky. John Rambo, that angry, merciless Vietnam War veteran, returns to kick some butt (and take off a few heads) in the appropriately titled Rambo (it seems Stallone enjoys naming his movies after his main characters).

Originally molded into pop-culture in First Blood (1982), in which Rambo was pitted against man as well as nature, Rambo finds the now solemn action hero trying to save a group of aid workers in the Burmese Jungle (where else?). Surely this will call to mind Rambo: First Blood Part II, and that's probably what the studio would like since that movie remains the biggest hit of the franchise with $300 million worldwide (in 1985 dollars).

Unlike the PG-rated Rocky Balboa, Stallone (again as writer and director) ups the ante on extreme violence and gore, so much that it makes Rocky look like a wimp. With his signature knife, bow and arrow, and red headband, Rambo enters the war zone ready to decapitate, rip out some throats and annihilate the enemy.

But are audiences are ready? The last Rambo installment will have come out 20 years ago when new one arrives in theaters, and that didn't perform nearly as well as it predecessors. Plus, do today's moviegoers even know Rambo?

Also hurting the movie's chances is its run-of-the-mill plot. Last year, Hollywood saw that audiences don't necessarily respond to heroes fighting in nature â€" both The Marine and The Condemned were box office duds. But to be fair, the stars of those movies, John Cena and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, are no Sly Stallone when it comes to selling movie tickets.

Rambo is more well-known, and like James Bond in Casino Royale, audiences enjoy watching tough-knuckled heroes pulverize the enemy with their bare hands. Also like Bond, Rambo speaks his fair share of cheesy one-liners, including, "When you're pushed, killing's as easy as breathing" and "Live for nothing or die for something."

Lionsgate either believes they're cornering the market by giving Rambo a late January release date or they have no faith in it at all. Rocky Balboa had the advantage of catering to families during the busy holiday movie-going season. Rambo, with its hard R-rating and iffy schedule, will have a higher hill to climb. The trailer is catchy but will likely only spark enthusiasm from fans of the original series, and those fans may not be going to the movies any more. Look for Rambo to have a respectable opening weekend but not as strong of legs to match the $70 million take of Rocky Balboa, which could mean Stallone will have to start playing new roles. Does anyone remember the time when a Johnny Depp movie was guaranteed to be unsuccessful? Only a decade ago, he was seen as the quirky and oddball actor who would pop up in what seemed like every other Tim Burton movie, and indie movies from people like Terry Gilliam. All that changed when he donned pirate gear and created an iconic movie character, even though he still pops up in what now seems like *every* Tim Burton movie.

Depp, for all his quirkiness, does like to stick with a few directors, including Burton, Gilliam, and Gore Verbinski. For Gilliam, he did Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and stepped in - along with a few other top-name actors - for the late Heath Ledger in the upcoming Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. For Verbinski, Depp's finally losing his Jack Sparrow accent and starring as the title character in the animated family film Rango, about a household pet who discovers what he truly is while on a mysterious adventure.

Depp is also reuniting here with John Logan, the screenwriter who adapted Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street from stage to screen last year. Adding Johnny Depp, Gore Verbinski, and John Logan to any movie is enough for most film geeks' mouths to water, but with this being an animated flick with major help from Industrial Light & Magic, have we all just drowned in our own saliva? Disgusting, yes, but this mixture should lend itself to a potentially awesome movie.

The awesomeness is compounded when you think about what kind of pet Depp will play. If I had my pick, I'd choose a lemur, who Depp is probably best suited to voice, but what wild adventures could a lemur get into? If I had to make Depp voice a dog, he'd be a quirky dog, but a dog nonetheless. Really, though, with a name like Rango and a voice like Depp's, my dream would be about Rango, the quirky lemur from down the street.
Lemur dreams aside, should we expect anything less quirky than that from Depp and the rest of these folks? One can only hope this movie will be as entertaining as the Pirates of the Caribbean series and perhaps half as long as Pirates 3. (Josh Spiegel/BOP)

Bobby Knight is a household name. Sadly, his fame doesn't really come from the fact that as a head basketball coach, he's won more than 800 games, three NCAA national championships, nine Big Ten championships and four national coach of the year awards. It's not because he took the 1984 men's Olympic basketball team all the way to a gold medal. No, it's because he's prone to outrageous temper tantrums and bad behavior both on and off the court.

His first well-known incident dates back all the way to 1976, when Knight was criticized for pulling one of his players off the court by his jersey. A few years later, he was arrested (and convicted in absentia) in Puerto Rico for assaulting a police officer. Then, he fired a pistol at a press conference to startle a reporter.

He really emerged as the bad boy of basketball, though, when he through a chair across the floor during a loss to state rival Purdue. Knight received three technical fouls and was ejected from the game, of course. Next came an incident where he banged his fist on the scorer's table during the NCAA tournament, and raised all kinds of ire when he compared losing a basketball game to being raped in an interview with Connie Chung.

Knight wasn't through yet. He was called a racist for pretending to whip black player Calbert Cheaney. A year later, Knight pulled his son from a game and appeared to kick him in the leg. He was fined multiple times over the next couple of years, once for berating an NCAA volunteer at a news conference, and another for making derogatory remarks to referee Ted Valentine in a game against Illinois (to be fair, Valentine was god-awful as a referee during those years).

Knight was next accused of choking a man outside a Mexican restaurant, then caused controversy after getting in the face of a boss after a lost game. Then came accusations that he grabbed a player by the neck during a practice, that he ejected Indiana University President Myles Brand for talking during practice, and wiped himself with toilet tissue in front of players to make a point. Things got worse and worse from this point, and Knight was eventually fired.

Since then, he's seemed calmer at Texas Tech University, but little events have cropped up, including an altercation with a chancellor at a local salad bar.

Why, you wonder, do we tell you the saga of Bobby Knight? The reason is that Martin Lawrence will star in a movie about a coach who bears a great deal of similarity to the infamous coach. After a public meltdown at his university, Lawrence's character has little recourse other than taking a job as a coach of a losing junior varsity team. Like Adam Sandler, he must learn to manage his anger in order to keep order and contentment in his life. Theoretically, hilarity should ensue. (Kim Hollis/BOP)

As a child growing up, I was a ravenous reader. Along with the Dr. Seuss books, the Berenstain Bears, Winnie the Pooh and Babar the elephant king, some of my favorite stories involved a BIG red dog named Clifford. As an avowed animal lover, the books were simply adorable, and even better, they were educational too! Author Norman Bridwell had conceived of a truly recipe to encourage brand new young readers.

Since then, the books have been adapted as an animated series on PBS, which even led to a spin-off prequel called Clifford's Puppy Days. The original series featured a big red Clifford voiced by the late John Ritter, and he returned for this full-length feature as well. While Bad Santa may have been the last time we physically "saw" the actor, Clifford's Really Big Movie goes down as his final theatrical performance.

As noted, Clifford is a BIG red dog. And I mean really big. Really, having such a pet would be kind of like having a dinosaur, only in this case he's furry, cuddly and super friendly. And also very, very hungry.

The movie will center around Clifford's realization that his constant appetite and the expense of feeding such a colossal pet must be a drain on his beloved family, the Howards. The gigantic pup makes the decision to head out into the world to fend for himself, accompanied by his friends T-Bone (Kel Mitchell) and Cleo (Cree Summer). The trio's adventures include joining a circus and meeting all kinds of strange new friends. Ultimately, it's Clifford's hope that he might even be able to win a lifetime supply of dog food.

Of course, Clifford's decision to venture out on his own leaves his human family heartbroken and worried, so they follow his tracks to try to find their bestest buddy and remind him just how much they love him. Warm fuzzies are almost certain to ensue.

After some successful test screenings, Warner Bros. will be rolling this family flick to a wider market. Targeted primarily at preschoolers, the film will rely on the fact that this market is woefully underserved when it comes to movie options. It should be an even bigger hit on DVD. (Kim Hollis/BOP)

Red Sands

This dark comedy has been described in the trades as a combination of Heathers, Election and American Beauty. Marcos Siega, who has directed such cultish series as Veronica Mars and Oliver Beene, looks to continue that trend in movies as he helms from a screenplay by first-time writer Skander Halim.

After striking a chord with audiences thanks to her performance in Thirteen, Evan Rachel Wood stars as Kimberly, a rich and precocious teenager who frames her English teacher for sexual harassment. After doing so, life at her private Beverly Hills high school is turned topsy-turvy. James Wood portrays her father (and from many reports, he steals the show), while the always under-rated Ron Livingston plays a teacher/attorney who helps defend the accused.

After debuting at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, Pretty Persuasion was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize, though it didn't come out the winner. Like 2004's Napoleon Dynamite, Pretty Persuasion is poised to be the "teen" film that should emerge as an indie favorite by the time the year is over. (Kim Hollis/BOP)

Red Tails represents one of the most intriguing titles on the 2012 schedule

The story of the Tuskegee Airmen is ground well covered by this point, particularly to fans of The History Channel. Despite this, Red Tails offers a new viewing experience due to the talent involved. Living legend George Lucas produced this film through his LucasFilm company. And although he is not credited officially as director, the various people involved with the production have acknowledged that Lucas' guiding hand oversaw a lot of the proceedings.

If the rare presence of George Lucas on a project were not exciting enough, his co-writer for Red Tails is none other than Aaron McGruder. If that name doesn't mean anything to you, let's substitute in the title of his most famous work to clarify the matter. McGruder is the creator of the comic strip that later became a television series known as The Boondocks. Aaron McGruder may be the funniest person in the world. Red Tails will be his first major motion picture screen credit.

Now that you know who wrote the story of Red Tails, let's examine the plot itself. Of course, if you are not onboard by now, I doubt you ever will be. Anyway, the Tuskegee Airmen were a group of African American fighter pilots who overcame blatant racism within the military. Even during the most desperate moments in World War II, government officials were reluctant to treat the Tuskegee Airmen as equals with their Caucasian troops. As the so-called Red Tails began to prove themselves on the battlefield (or in the battle air, as it were), they were treated with greater respect and less racism. Eventually, the men of Red Tails earned the Presidential Unit Citation, only given to approximately 50 units during World War II.

As one would expect for a project of this measure, the acting talent is significant. Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard anchor a cast that includes such notables as Nate Parker (The Great Debaters), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Gerald McRaney (Deadwood) and David Oyelowo (Rise of the Planet of the Apes). Rappers Ne-Yo and Method Man also portray a couple of Red Tails. (David Mumpower/BOP)

Director and screenwriter Agustin Diaz Yanes brings us this tale of the battle of good versus evil for the fate of a soul. Our combatants come in the form of two angels, one good, played by Victoria Abril, and the other evil, played by Penelope Cruz.

This Spanish-language movie begins with the heavens in crisis. Both heaven and hell are fighting for control of humankind. Apparently, the soul of a boxer named Manny (Demian Bichir) is the key to winning the ultimate prize. Angel Lola Nevado (Abril) tries to show Manny the benefits of coming to heaven while her counterpart angel Carmen Ramos (Cruz) tempts him with seductive visions of hell, which may not be so bad after all.

The movie had its Spanish release on November 28th, 2001 using its native-language title of Sin Noticias de Dios. The US release has been pushed back from it original date of early November 2002 to the 1st quarter of 2003. (Marty Doskins/BOP)

Derived from the words "religion" and "ridiculous," Bill Maher's documentary Religulous looks at what Maher feels is the problem with organized religion, which is pretty much everything.

An outspoken critic of organized religion on his HBO show Real Time With Bill Maher, the comedian travels to various religious destinations around the world, such as the Vatican and Jerusalem, and interviews people of various faiths, including something called the Raelian Movement. Lionsgate was originally planning an Easter release for Religulous, but delays as a result of the WGA strike have pushed it back to October. Notable television writer and director Larry Charles directs. His last theatrical release was Borat, so he's had success at this type of thing before.

One hopes Maher gives most religions a fair shake as he attempts to understand them, but we're also counting on some trademark snark from Maher, who can be entertaining given the correct topic. As controversial as it might be, touching on a still-taboo topic, it probably won't be given much of a wide release, though. (Tim Briody/BOP)

Remember Me

There are some things that just work in the movie business. One of them is to make sure to sign a rising young actor who has become a heartthrob to millions of young American females to a romantic role. Another successful strategy is to take an actor from a popular film franchise and sign him, which will appeal to the fans of the franchise that made him popular. Summit Entertainment has done both and is looking for fans to embrace the film Remember Me.

Remember Me will be another film that adds to Robert Pattinson's growing stardom. Pattinson will play Tyler Roth, a 23-year-old man who has been trying to cope with the suicide of his brother. Unable to deal with the tragedy Tyler's parents separate, only adding to the young man's grief. As the story unfolds, he encounters Ally Craig (played by Emilie De Ravin), who has suffered a very similar tragedy. Tyler spends weeks trying to figure out if he is in love with her or not.

Robert Pattinson was thrust into the limelight with his role in Twilight in November of 2008 and young audiences responded. While the quality of his acting and his chemistry with the other cast members were unspectacular, the response he received from teenage girls familiar with the Twilight book series was remarkable. Their vampire inspired romance with Pattinson thrust the film forward to being one of the most successful films of 2008. The $191 million it made domestically was largely due to the interest of young females infatuated with the young man.

Remember Me appears to have more than just Pattinson's fame working for it. Pierce Brosnan has signed on to play Charles Roth, Pattinson's on screen father. After the James Bond films, Brosnan is one of the more recognizable actors in the business and his role in Mamma Mia! (2008) helped catapult that movie as an international mega hit. Adding to the list of very noteworthy performers are Chris Cooper and Lena Olin. Cooper has delivered memorable roles in films like A Time To Kill (1996), American Beauty (1999), The Bourne Identity (2000), and Syriana (2005). Olin brings her long experience in film (Unbearable Likeness of Being, Romeo is Bleeding, Chocolat) to add to the talent.

For Summit Entertainment, Remember Me may also add to a list of growing successes in recent years. In addition to Twilight, the studio was responsible for Knowing (2009) and Nim's Island (2008).

Remember Me is written by Will Fetters and Jenny Lumet. Allen Coulter directs. (Jason Barney/BOP)

No, this is not a sequel to the 1984 Emilio Estevez clunker. Repo Men is a science fiction thriller starring Jude Law. Set in the near future where people are now purchasing organs on credit, the film sounds like it has quite an interesting concept. The production was initially titled Repossession Mambo and based on a novel of the same name by author Eric Garcia, who also wrote the screenplay. However, the movie already seems to be walking a fine line between originality and copying the plot of the 2008 musical, Repo! The Genetic Opera. Perhaps, the name change can be attributed to a mambo being musically themed much like an opera and the distributor, Universal Studios, needs to distance itself as far away as possible from The Genetic Opera?

Law stars as Remy, a repo man whose body is made up almost entirely of artificial organs. When Remy fails to make payments on his artificial heart, his former partner, played by Forest Whitaker, comes to repossess the heart and the chase is on. That will give some nightmares to anyone who has had unpleasant dealings with a creditor in the past.

Directed by newcomer Miguel Sapochnik and also starring Liev Schreiber, the film looks to be a bloody, fast-paced affair that may even pose a few relevant questions to the audience in regards to the state of the current economy and the U.S. health care system. Hopefully, Repo Men will be similar in quality to Jude Law's first mainstream Hollywood movie and science fiction classic, Gattaca. That was a brilliant film that was both highly entertaining and made a statement on the state of racism.

On a personal note, Repo Men should provide plenty of interest as it was filmed entirely in Southern Ontario where I live, so I will be looking for recognizable locations in Hamilton, Burlington, and Toronto, Ontario. (Ryan O'Neill/BOP)

Free download Repo The Genetic Opera movie

In the past couple years, movie musicals have made an impressive comeback. Both Dreamgirls and Hairspray grossed over $100 million each, and 2007's Beatles-inspired love story, Across the Universe, showed unusually strong legs for a limited release.

It's only natural that every Hollywood studio, including the reputably dark Lionsgate, are jumping aboard the latest lucrative bandwagon. This spring, Lionsgate releases the macabre musical, Repo! The Genetic Opera, based on the play written and composed by Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich.

Darren Lynn Bousman, a Lionsgate alum after the last three Saw pictures, directs the deathly comic film, about a biotech company that loans out body organs in the wake of a worldwide epidemic. When the patients can't keep up with payments, repo men come a callin' to take back the goods…by any means necessary.

Repo! follows the modestly successful, though highly praised, Sweeney Todd, which, despite its high-profile actor (Johnny Depp) and director (Tim Burton), never quite found a mass audience, though it's common for dark musicals, including notable juggernaut The Rocky Horror Picture Show, to succeed mostly as cult films. It's the brighter, cheerier and more colorful ones that break the bank with general audiences. Repo! seems destined to continue that trend, which means it will have a tough time earning back its reported $45 million production budget.

Still, the film's early trailer is energetic, catchy and boosts curiosity, and that's what the film will need to draw crowds. Without much starpower (the cast includes Paul Sorvino, Alexa Vega and Paris Hilton), Repo! will have to sell itself on its concept and strong reviews, which are common for the genre.

Lionsgate will have to make a strong impression on opening weekend. It's a long shot, but given the current popularity of musicals, Repo! might be able to crack $50 million by the end of its run (similar to Sweeney Todd's domestic earnings), but it will most likely earn the majority of its revenue (and audience) on the home market. In 1996, video game giant Capcom unleashed Resident Evil upon unsuspecting gamers worldwide. A smart blend of puzzles, action, and spooks immediately latched on with critics and fanboys alike. The title would spawn a smorgasbord of sequels, prequels, and spin-offs. It also created an entirely new genre of video game, often referred to as “survival horror.” Forty million units sold later, Resident Evil still packs a punch in the gaming world.

Not one to miss a trend (albeit a tad tardy), Hollywood thought it was time for Resident Evil to get the big screen treatment in 2002. Sony picked up the rights and tapped genre veteran Paul W.S. Anderson (Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon) to direct the adaptation. Optioning a hugely successful video game franchise might seem like an obvious move, but keep in mind the failure rate for most game-to-movie titles was astronomically high. This is still largely true, but was even more so at the time. Still, Sony saw promise in the project, giving it a modest $35 million dollar budget and cast model-cum-actress Milla Jovovich as the lead.

The original Resident Evil grossed a so-so $40 million stateside, but managed a nice $63 million from foreign territories. After factoring in DVD rentals and sales, Sony made a tidy profit from the venture and smelled a franchise. Two more entries followed, pessimistically titled Apocolypse”and Extinction. They both followed the same tried and true formula: catchy ads + zombie action + sexy Milla = Ka-ching! The budgets came in at around $50 million a piece and both wound up around the mid nine figures worldwide. These movies did not receive the critical reception of there video game counterparts but they did serve up some shameless fun.

Anderson voluntarily took a back seat to other directors for the sequels but stayed involved with the projects as both a writer and producer. Skirting directorial duties allowed him to chase after the gorgeous Ms. Jovovich. His efforts paid dividends and the pair tied the knot in an August 2009 wedding. In either an odd coincidence or a lucrative wedding present, Sony announced an unexpected fourth installment of the ‘RE' series, with Milla starring and Anderson directing.

Anderson has a slew of titles in development or pre-production, but as a director he has worked sparingly since the first entry back in 2002. His only credits since are Alien vs. Predator and Death Race. Before the first ‘RE' he oversaw the giant bomb Soldier and the terrible, if successful Mortal Kombat. If you are wondering how someone can stay in the business with such a hideous CV then pick up Event Horizon. Just don't blame your nightmares on us.

The Ukrainian knockout Jovovich has kept up a wildly diverse resume. She has appeared anywhere from indie fare (Chaplin) to kooky comedies (Zoolander) to historical epics (The Messenger). In a sense she is a perfectly odd choice to anchor an action franchise. Those roles are usually reserved for muscular men or Angelina Jolie. Despite the odd casting Milla has worked well for the franchise. She brings talent, requisite eye candy, and a willingness to defer to the special effects as needed.

Dubbed Resident Evil: Afterlife, Milla's Alice will continue her (apparent) never ending battle with the insidious Umbrella Corporation. The script has been kept under wraps (read: they don't have a clue about the storyline), but the settings have been rumored to take place in Japan and Alaska. Anderson pumped up the expectations for Afterlife at Comic-Con, promising a bigger budget and a 3D outing. Each sequel made more than the last, so it will be interesting to see if a larger production equals a greater outcome. (Brian Pew/BOP)

Resistance

In a mid-1940s Czechlosovokia where the lands are occupied by Nazis, a young woman named Eliska finds herself unable to finish medical school because the Germans have closed the universities. Instead, she works as a nurse in a city hospital and becomes involved in the Resistance movement with the surgeon Richard, who is also her lover, and also their friend Dr. Chldek.

When a seriously injured man from a rural mountain area is brought into the hospital one evening in need of a transfusion, it turns out that Eliska is the only one with a matching blood type. In the end, her blood saves his life and sets into motion a connection between them. The relationship grows as the friends counterbalance each other quite positively - Eliska's urbane, sophisticated and educated mind sets off Joza's salt of the earth tendencies quite nicely.

Suddenly, the resistance group is discovered and its members are being sought out be the Gestapo. Richard flees the country overnight, leaving his lover Eliska alone, though other members of the Resistance assist her in finding a place to hide. They ask Joza, the man she saved, to harbor her at his mountain cabin. Eliska must leave her cosmopolitan life and transform into a new personality - Hana, the wife of a mountain man and resident of a timeless mountain village called Zelary. The conflict between her two very different lives makes up the central theme of the film.

Zelary was one of the Academy Award nominees for Best Foreign Language Film in 2004, coming in as runner-up to the Canadian Barbarian Invasions. (Kim Hollis/BOP)

Ring Of Death

When I was a child, my sister instilled a great fear of the horror film genre in me. When I was very young, she was babysitting me one night and decided it would be a good idea to watch a certain horror film with me (mostly hiding under my blankie). The hiding did not work, because horror films are like car accidents â€" despite the knowledge that you really should not look, you can't help it. In recent years I have overcome this fear to become a horror film junkie. I cannot seem to get enough of them now. I have great hopes for the horror film releases planned for 2007, including One Missed Call. The question is, will I be disappointed?

Similar to the plot of The Ring (where viewing a video informed victims of their impending death), this film similarly has people discovering that their days on earth are limited. The soon-to-be victim realizes they have one missed call on their cell phone, but when they listen to the message an eerie thing happens â€" the message is their own voice from the future revealing the date and time as well as some of the details of their death. One Missed Call stars Edward Burns (She's the One, Saving Private Ryan, Sidewalks of New York), Shannyn Sossamon (A Knight's Tale, 40 Days and 40 Nights, The Order, Chasing Ghosts, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Azura Skye (Dementia, 28 Days, and Red Dragon), Ana Claudia Talancon, Ray Wise, Rhoda Griffis, Margaret Cho, and Jessica Brown.

Recent remakes of Japanese horror films have enjoyed success; however â€" like all good things â€" this must eventually come to an end. Will One Missed Call bring the Japanese horror remakes to their knees? First there were the video tapes of The Ring, now we have One Missed Call. This remake of the Japanese horror film Chakushin Ari (2003) will either be the next of a series of great psychological thrillers or another predictable horror wannabe. (Meghan Peel/BOP)

Semi-Pro: FREE Download Links!

Will Ferrell has become the go-to guy for the sports send-up. After breaking into the big time with Elf and Anchorman, Ferrell has had two major hits in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and Blades of Glory, which poked some fun at NASCAR and ice skating. Now, he moves into the arena of professional basketball, and the results are likely to be hilarious.

Semi-Pro is set in 1976, when the ABA was a league side-by-side with the NBA. The ABA was a bit more innovative and fun than the NBA at the time, as they were responsible for such fun additions as the three-point shot and the slam-dunk contest. Ferrell plays a musician named Jackie Moon, a guy who had a one-hit wonder type of song with "Love Me Sexy". He uses the profits from that song to buy an ABA team, the Flint Michigan Tropics.

Sadly, Moon's team isn't particularly good. In fact, they're the worst team in the ABA when Moon gets the word that the ABA is planning to merge with the NBA. The Tropics are in danger of folding, which means that Moon and his team are going to have the achieve the impossible - win - to survive.

If Ferrell's past recent success is any indication, Semi-Pro should be a hit. However, distributor New Line has had a rough go of it recently, and will need to market the film within an inch of its life to ensure its success. (Kim Hollis/BOP)

Download Sex and the City free

I'm way more familiar with Sex and the City than I'd like to be. If I come upon an episode, which isn't hard to do these days thanks to TBS and the CW, there's a very good chance that I've seen it before. There's also a strong probability that I'll be able to divulge the episode's entire plot, citing character names, back-stories and perhaps a few quotes along the way. Ugh.

My disdain isn't because of some puffed up estro-phobic perception that Sex and the City is unmanly (okay, maybe a little). I used to really enjoy the show before I realized that Carrie and Co. weren't whimsically hilarious but rather annoyingly spoiled. Will and Grace falls under the same tenet.

But let's face it, whether I like it, used to like it, or hate it makes no difference. This show and these films aren't made for me any more than a Tyler Perry film is. I'm not the only guy who resisted the seeing the ladies carry out their antics on the big screen on Memorial Day weekend of 2008. Besides, we men had our own idol to behold. Of course, in retrospect, Indiana Jones 4 was probably way more painful. The fact is, no men were going to the Sex and the City movie under their own free will and most girls probably preferred it that way. Thus, the burning question on the eve of its opening was this: could women alone make the movie a hit in a cinematic climate so completely dominated by males? Answer? Hell, yes.

The significance of SatC's $57 million opening was that unlike other female targeted fare - i.e. the latest Matthew McConaughey offering â€" this was not counter-programming or cookie-cutter February filler. This was a genuine tentpole release that stood up and was counted with the “big boys” and had numbers to back it up. Domestic gross: $152 million. Worldwide gross: $415 million. Disappointed men: Priceless.

With these stats, and women now confirmed as the most formidable new box office demographic since Christianity, Sex and the City Part Deux was stuffed into the pipeline.

Like the first film, the plot is being kept tightly under wraps, other than Kristen Davis saying it will be “very different” and SJP declaring it will be “a romp!” Thanks, ladies. However, I have a source on the inside that has given me the lowdown. You heard it here first on BOP, the exclusive skinny on the plot of Sex and the City 2. Carrie and Big are happy, then they aren't, Carries write about it. Charlotte is uptight about things. Miranda has short hair and is neurotic. Samantha talks in a phone sex voice. They go to brunch, clubs and perhaps an international destination featuring pretty scenery. They wear expensive shoes, clothes and talk in hyper-scripted banter that sounds just like what every woman thinks she and her friends sound like. Roll credits.

At the risk of improper preview formatting I will forgo the primary cast rundown as I have hard time believing that someone, be it male, female or Christian Bale (that isn't a comment on the gender of Christian Bale; it just rhymes) doesn't know the name, traits and which of the four leading ladies they are most like. I'm a Charlotte.

The supporting cast looks to remain the same with many of the ladies' counterparts, Chris Noth, Evan Handler and David Eigenberg signed on. In Noth's case, his involvement was initially in doubt. Whether he was holding out for money or playing chicken with his dignity is his own business, but money, as it always seems to, won out. Apparently, it takes seven figures to gag your dignity.

Michael Patrick King, whose hand has been in almost every Sex and the City offering at every level, be it TV or film, be it writer, director or producer, will do the same for the sequel. All that's left is for King is to strap on Manolos, grab a cosmo and start bashing men. I apologize for using the most obvious and tired trademarks but my knowledge of the fashion world is akin to Michael Bay's knowledge of restraint.

The only other tidbit of info is that some of the cast and crew have recognized the ladies' frivolous spending, one of the franchise's hallmarks, is not exactly up with times given our current economic situation. Vows have been made not just to acknowledge but also incorporate this into the film on some level. Personally, I don't think the audience really cares. The reason they're going to this movie is to forget about things like a financial crisis. It's not like Transformers commented on the status of the auto industry.

Speaking of Transformers, it's funny to compare the two. Robots that turn into sports cars may be a completely different chromosome altogether, but I think the shoe fits (puns!). Like Transformers, the plot of Sex and the City plays almost no factor in the target audience's enjoyment of the film, which, when you think about it, is really something. With Sex and the City, women finally have their own mindlessly entertaining money spewing franchise. Women get a raw deal in the movies. In front of the camera, unless they're named Cate or Kate, women are generally stuck with roles that feature little dialogue and little clothing. It's only fitting that in Sex and the City men are the two-dimensional brainless eye candy. Behind the camera, it's even worse. Quick, name five female directors without the aid of Wikipedia.

Now that they're recognized as a box office force, hopefully women will get to see more films made just for them. Films they can enjoy with their friends without us smelly guys around. And hopefully one day, films that are made not just for women but by them too.

So to all you ladies out there, I wish you a marvelous time at the movies. Let me know how SatC 2 is, because there's no way in hell I'm going to see it. That is, unless Aiden comes back. (Tom Macy/BOP)

Sex Drive: FREE Download Links!

It's been a while since there's been a teen sex comedy and 20th Century Fox is remedying that with Sex Drive.

Ian (Josh Zuckerman) believes he's found the girl of his dreams over the Internet. Since these sort of things always work out in the end, he hops in a car with his two best friends and off they go to live happily ever after.

There's not much more to go on here. There are some TV actors you may or may not recognize (30 Rock, Greek, Kyle XY) but this is either your bag or not, so there you go. (Tim Briody/BOP)

Any time you see the name "John Waters" attached to a film, you know it's going to be waaaaaaay out there. After stuff like Polyester, Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, Serial Mom and Cecil B. Demented, you'd think he might have taken "quirky" as far as it can go, but it looks as though he's outdone even himself this time.

A Dirty Shame, which Waters describes as an, ahem, "cunnilingus concussion comedy," follows the daily adventures of Sylvia Stickles (Tracey Ullman), the owner of a convenience store who suffers an injury to the head. This injury causes her sex drive to transform dramatically, to the point that her sexual addiction threatens to destroy her already dysfunctional family. While her husband (Chris Isaak) is initially overjoyed by her wild, passionate urges and needs, he soon finds himself in the unique position of being a man who can't quite keep up.

As with all Waters films, A Dirty Shame is set in the city of Baltimore, the writer/director's own hometown. Also notable is the fact that Mary Vivian Pierce, who has a small role as a recovering sex addict, will continue her unabated streak of appearing in every single one of Waters' movies. A host of other Waters regulars are also along for the ride.

Fine Line Features, which has previously distributed such films as Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Elephant, and American Splendor, will maintain their support of all things idiosyncratic as they release A Dirty Shame to major cities. Waters does have a devoted following and many of his films are considered cult classics. A Dirty Shame should be a worthy successor to those filmic ancestors. (Kim Hollis/BOP)

What the world needs now is a family of kung-fu masters applying their sweet science to the sport of soccer. Should Harvey Weinstein ever relent and finally allow its release, North American audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy such an experience.

Shaolin Soccer is a story about Golden Leg Hung, an injured former star player whose career is stolen from under him a scheming evil-doer. As his life degenerates into a miserable existence of bottom-feeding, this man encounters Sing, a young man with incredibly powerful feet. He immediately forms a wild scheme to return to glory. He will teach the boy how to use the martial arts to excel at the world's most popular sport.

The problem with this is that a soccer team needs more than one player. Fortuitously, Sing has a set of incompetent, equally unhappy brothers searching for meaning in their lives. He also knows a dissheveled young woman, who also happens to have the type of dextrous hands that are perfect for a goalie...or a girlfriend. The group determines that they are best served becoming shaolin soccer stars.

Shaolin Soccer redefines quirky humor. If the concept described above makes you laugh, there is a lot to like in this former recipient of the Hong Kong Film Awards Best Picture. If the above makes you scratch your head, run away screaming right now. Shaolin Soccer is even weirder than its description sounds. (David Mumpower/BOP)

Shattered

Veteran writer Billy Ray makes his feature film debut with this inside look at the world of journalism. The story is based on the article in the September 1998 issue of Vanity Fair titled “Shattered Glass”.

Fresh of his starring role in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, Hayden Christensen stars as Stephen Glass. Mr. Glass was a staff writer for the respected magazine The New Republic and a freelance feature writer for publications such as Rolling Stone, Harper's and George. By the mid-90s, Glass' articles had turned him into one of the most sought-after young journalists in Washington. However, to get to these heights in his career, Glass either partially or completely made up 27 of the 41 articles he had published during his tenure. But Glass' world came crashing down when his editor (Peter Sarsgaard) and others found out the truth.

The film is a look inside what is supposed to be the noble profession of journalism. It is supposed to be our most prized right in the Constitution. But what happens when our trust in these journalists is called into question? Our basic freedoms can be threatened. In light of the recent scandal at the New York Times, this movie should gain some interest by movie audiences. (Marty Doskins/BOP)

No doubt capitalizing on his Desperate Housewives fame, Jesse Metcalfe plays the title character, the big man on campus and high school lothario. He's the captain of the basketball team and most popular guy in school. All the other guys want to be him, and all the girls want to date him, which is exactly what three of them are doing at the same time. When they find out they plot revenge by trying to get him to fall in love with a new girl and then having her dump him.

It's another in the long line of high school comedies where a relationship starts for alterior motives (She's All That, 10 Things I Hate About You, Whatever it Takes,...) I wonder if perhaps the two protagonists might really fall for each other of the course of the movie. Still it looks like harmless fun with shirtless Jesse Metcalfe for the girls and some girl-girl kissing for the boys. (Dan Krovich/BOP)

She's The Man: FREE Download Links!

A contemporary take on William Shakespeare's comedy Twelfth Night, She's the Man will join such teen flicks as 10 Things I Hate About You, "O" and Get Over It as an adaptation of the Bard's work for a youthful audience.

The story centers on a teenage girl named Viola (Amanda Bynes) who learns that her school has cut her soccer team as an available sport. She disguises herself as her twin brother, taking his place at his new boarding school. Naturally, all sorts of romantic complications arise, as she falls for her new roommate, but is of course also the object of affection for a beautiful girl. Making matters even worse, when her actual twin, Sebastian, arrives, everything goes to turmoil.

Bynes has been absent from the big screen for awhile, though she will have a couple of projects arrive in theaters in a fairly short period of time (Lovewrecked is the other). She's proven to be quite charming in The Amanda Show, What I Like About You, and even her film What a Girl Wants, and it will be interesting to see if she can avoid the declining box office trajectory of fellow teen star Hilary Duff. Download Sherlock Holmes 2 A Game Of Shadows free

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is a high-profile Hollywood sequel in just about every sense of the phrase. Going in, we know it's a studio tent pole being released in the heart of the holiday movie-going season, and so we watch it and enjoy it on those terms. But even if we weren't privy to this context, we'd still appreciate the movie because it's so well made. This is a mainstream production that utilizes its hefty budget to provide a kinetic and entertaining experience, and that's mostly what we ask for.

On the whole, the movie is about as good as the original Sherlock Holmes, which was fun, energetic and sort of jolly. A Game of Shadows has those same qualities but is a little less simply for the fact it's not as fresh and the screenplay doesn't go out of its way to try anything new or different. It's more of the same, but “the same” in this case still has enough juice in it to be satisfying. And like James Bond or Indiana Jones, this is the type of series where each installment acts independently of the others, and so the focus is less on story and character development and more on villain and plot.

Lucky for us, the villain and plot in A Game of Shadows are actually quite good. It's 1891 and Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr., still a formidable choice for the role) is investigating a series of bombings and assassinations in France and Germany. Crudely disguising himself, he tails his on-again off-again flame, Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), who's surreptitiously delivering packages for Professor James Moriarty (deliciously played and made memorable by Jared Harris). Moriarty is an author and mathematical genius and Holmes spends two sleepless days creating a diorama that makes him the prime suspect for all the recent terrorism. In the meantime, he overlooks his best man duties for his old pal and former assistant, Watson (Jude Law), who's getting married to Mary (Kelly Reilly).

On the night of Watson's stag party, Holmes' investigation leads him to Moriarty's next potential victim, a fortune teller named Simza (Noomie Rapace), who fills the role of strong female sidekick this time around. Holmes, Watson and Simza make their way to Paris to thwart Moriarty's next strike, but for the first time, Holmes feels outsmarted, which is where his brute fearlessness and ability to endure pain come in handy.
