Veteran writer Billy Ray makes his feature film debut with this inside look at the world of journalism. The story is based on the article in the September 1998 issue of Vanity Fair titled âShattered Glassâ.
Fresh of his starring role in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, Hayden Christensen stars as Stephen Glass. Mr. Glass was a staff writer for the respected magazine The New Republic and a freelance feature writer for publications such as Rolling Stone, Harper's and George. By the mid-90s, Glass' articles had turned him into one of the most sought-after young journalists in Washington. However, to get to these heights in his career, Glass either partially or completely made up 27 of the 41 articles he had published during his tenure. But Glass' world came crashing down when his editor (Peter Sarsgaard) and others found out the truth.
The film is a look inside what is supposed to be the noble profession of journalism. It is supposed to be our most prized right in the Constitution. But what happens when our trust in these journalists is called into question? Our basic freedoms can be threatened. In light of the recent scandal at the New York Times, this movie should gain some interest by movie audiences. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
