This film had its world premiere at the 2001 Venice International Film Festival, and will have its US premiere at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival as part of the American Showcase films. This is director Jill Sprecher's second feature film, and shows improvement over her 1997 film, Clockwatchers.

The four main stories of the film revolve around one major question: how to achieve happiness. The film's two best performances come from Alan Arkin, as the manager of an insurance-claims department; and Matthew McConaughey, as a guilt-ridden lawyer who is involved in a hit-and-run accident. The stories are intertwined and kept flowing using a well-written screenplay by the director and her sister, Karen. The editor has also done a good job of pacing, helping the story along and keeping it from becoming too confusing. There have been some comparisons to Pulp Fiction in terms of storytelling style. We hop back and forth in time to see the cause-and-effect of people's actions.

If you're not lucky enough to go to Sundance this year, make sure you see it when it gets released later on in the year. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
