Friday was one of the most surprisingly profitable films of 1995, grossing $27.4 million, and you know this MAN! It brought Chris Tucker to a wide audience and proved Ice Cube could write a screenplay. That success brought on Next Friday, which was even more profitable in 2000, grossing $57.18 million even without Chris Tucker. So naturally, New Line Cinema green-lit Friday After Next.
Friday After Next will follow the further exploits of Craig (Ice Cube) and his family and friends on - get this - a Friday. Hopefully for New Line's sake, the re-teaming of Ice Cube and DJ Pooh as screenwriters will give the third film the freshness and laid-back appeal that the original Friday had. Although Next Friday was a financial success, it didn't have the word-of-mouth or laughs that the original did. First-time feature-film director Marcus Raboy won't have to worry about this film making money; New Line should be able to easily to make a profit. The first two films only cost $3.5 million and $9.5 million, respectively. So the question isn't profit, but how much profit? If New Line can work some of the PR magic that they have for other franchise films like Austin Powers, Rush Hour, and Blade, they could be in for a windfall of money. (David Parker/BOP)
