German director Christian Alvart will be bringing us his first American project in Case 39, a film about the events surrounding caring social worker Emily Jenkins (Renee Zellweger) and young Lillith Sullivan (Jodelle Ferland), a child that she has rescued from an abusive home. However, word around the worldwide campfire is that young Lillith may not deserve quite as much sympathy as Emily was initially prepared to give. Since there are no details (as of this writing) beyond that, does this mean that Lillith is a thief? A killer? Someone with bad table manners? Only time will tell.
Christian Alvart currently has two films to his credit (Curiosity and the Cat (1999) and Antimatter (2005)) which both revolve around the macabre. In Curiosity and the Cat, a writer becomes a bit too curious about a neighbor who gets their jollies from sadomasochistic hobbies. Antimatter is a film about a clash of minds between a serial killer and a police interrogator. Given the dark subject matter of his previous films, we can't expect this to be a buddy movie.
Further evidence to support that claim would be the presence of actress Jodelle Ferland, who seems to have found a niche playing creepy children in creepy movies (The Messengers, Silent Hill). Also included is Deadwood star Ian McShane, whose gifts include a knack for playing the anti-hero, and looking ticked-off all the time. Zellweger has little experience with horror (The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Shark Tale), but does bring some considerable acting skill to the table. More to come as details unfold.
