Predators: FREE Download Links!

The vast and mighty sea of the Cinematic Reboot strikes us once again. Looking at the release schedule for 2010, you could be forgiven for thinking you've gone Back to the Future and right into the 1980s.

To be fair, Robert Rodriguez's Predators can certainly be taken as a sequel. After all, by applying the plural form to Predator, it's obviously emulating the Aliens (1986) - Alien (1979) situation, and the plot almost certainly will not pit the alien hunter of the title against a batch of jungle commandos, as the first film did. But it still has that "Re-" air about it. Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that. After all, some of my best friends are reboots.

The Predator series itself has an interesting history. It began essentially as a successful Arnold Schwarzenegger summer vehicle in 1987; in grossing $59 million, it became Arnie's highest box office score up until then (Twins obliterated that the next year). Arnold turned down the sequel, and what Predator 2 ended up as was a noisy, early '90s-style action film that got lost in the Christmas season of 1990. The $30 million domestic gross was a downer considering the $35 million budget, and so that was that for the Predator franchise. Life went on as before.

Ah, but there were a few things no one following this storyline could have predicted: the popularization of the internet in the 1990s, the massive box office of Star Wars: Episode I in 1999, and the subsequent transformation of the summer movie season into a series of wish-fulfilment projects geared at the fanboys who drooled over the now-iconic sci-fi and horror characters introduced in the decades before. The subjects of thousands of 1990s message board posts were becoming cinematic reality one by one in the 2000s, and Freddy vs. Jason was the first film to actively pit two fanboy favorites against each other. That one opened to $36 million and finished with $82 million in August 2003, and thus the door was opened for the equally long-awaited Alien vs. Predator, matching up the two aliens from Twentieth Century Fox. That one grossed a fair $80 million in August 2004, and the inevitable sequel, this time with a more respectable MPAA rating - "R" - gobbled up $41 million in December 2007. That's OK, but it's not a whole lot of money, and so the door seemed shut on the Predator series once again.

But isn't it interesting how this franchise lives on by latching onto the movie trends of the day? By the late 2000s, the above-mentioned reboot mania had come into play, and so we arrive at this project, and back to the beginning. 20th Century Fox seems to be taking this one very seriously, and in putting genre stalwart Rodriguez behind the camera, they're obviously hoping for the franchise to receive a much-needed doze of Rodriguez's unique style. That's reflected in naming the film "Robert Rodriguez's Predators", at least upon inception. Rodriguez is coming off a failure of sorts with his 50-50 participation in Grindhouse (2007), and 2009's Shorts sounds like another entry in his family film cannon, so he's ripe to get into a big-budget special effects movie. I'd say that the AvP films are too recent, however, for this to feel quite as fresh and untinted as a few other recent reboots did.

If Rodriguez's Predators makes $100 million, something with "Alien" in the title will be hitting screens in 2011. And I'll have another reboot to complain about. (Michael Lynderey/BOP)

Sundance 2004 got an early start this year as Lions Gate Films jumped the gun a bit in acquiring Saw even before the festival began. Like Open Water, the other wildly popular horror film at the festival, Saw proved to be an instant hit with prospective distributors. In the end, the film's production company, Evolution Management picked Lions Gate because of their recent track record. Low budget horror films such as House of 1000 Corpses and Cabin Fever fared well thanks to the nurturing of the rising distributor. Evolution spokesman Oren Koules also noted the handling of the upcoming High Tension as being key to their decision making.

What is it about Saw that makes the movie so popular with potential suitors? The story.

Saw plays upon the lurking fear that all of us try to keep pushed beneath the surface. It tells the stories of Dr. Lawrence Gordon and his newly-discovered companion, Adam. The latter gentleman has recently survived a near-death experience at the bottom a filthy bathtub. When Adam wakes up, he quickly realizes that his situation is not greatly improved.

Comfortably resting between Adam and the doctor is a blood-soaked corpse. Judging from the gun in the hand and the bullet hole in the brain, the former human has apparently committed suicide. The two survivors would like to do their best CSI and investigate further. Alas, both of them are frightened to discover they are chained to a wall.

You might be inclined to believe their predicament could not possibly grow more perilous. You would be wrong in that assumption. Lawrence and Adam find out that their capturer is the illustrious Jigsaw, a homicidal maniac so designated because of the way he marks his territory so to speak. The slayer has gained this moniker because of the way he brands his victims in the pattern of a jigsaw puzzle piece. It's the killer's way of taunting the cops while taking credit for the crime.

Summarizing, Adam and Doc Gordon awaken to find themselves chained to a wall. A corpse is the third member of the group. The captor is a serial killer who relishes taunting the police with the details of his many crimes. I know two fellows who are going to need a lot of therapy if they manage to survive all this.

Saw is something of a combination of Cube and The Bourne Identity. The prisoners awaken to a terrifying predicament but are armed with no memory of how they got to be here. If the duo is unable to work together quickly and effectively, that's the ballgame.

In addition to the killer (no pun intended) premise, Saw also offers some strong acting talent. Dr Lawrence Gordon is played by the Dread Pirate Roberts himself, Cary Elwes. Adam is played by virtual unknown Leigh Whanell. His presence is explained by the fact that he wrote the screenplay. That's one way to avoid the casting couch. Everything felt so real, after all. As she pieces the puzzle together, she soon realizes that she wasn't dreaming, and that her perfect life was nothing close to what she believed it had been. free download links for Prince of Persia The Sands of Time

Imagine for a moment that you are a prince. Heir to the throne, you spend your entire life training for that inevitable moment when you ascend to the crown, thereby becoming the (hopefully) benevolent ruler of your people.

One day while out adventuring (you have to kill the time some way, right?), you accidentally uncover an artifact that holds the power of time itself. Using the sands within the device, you are now able to bend the very fabric of time and space to your will. It's good to be the king.

In yarns like this, such power always holds a downside. In this instance, there is a despot who is unhappy that you have the audacity to have discovered said artifact before his henchmen could. He swears to commit any act of atrocity needed to gain possession of the relic that holds the power of time. Once he has it, you know he won't stop there, either. If Disney movies have taught us nothing else, it's that evil tyrants won't rest until they have either enslaved or destroyed humanity. In this case, your new mortal enemy falls into the latter category.

Sure, it sounds rough, but did I mention you also have a beautiful princess assisting you in your journey? Hey, who knows... The two of you might even fall in love and make beautiful heirs to the throne together.

Unlike the slew of other videogame based movies being thrown together these days, Prince of Persia has a pedigree to it. Jerry Bruckheimer, last seen counting all his hundred dollar bills after Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, seeks to use that movie's blockbuster success as a stepping stone for this adaptation. As with Pirates, Bruckheimer wants to make a movie that doesn't isn't completely true to the videogame storyline but insteads harbors its own mythology with regards to the characters and plot. The movie industry's most successful producer envisions the Prince as a ninth century Indiana Jones, so the expectation is for the swashbuckling to be played up much more than in the action and trap-based videogame. Project X

Found footage movies are all the rage for one simple reason. They're dirt cheap to produce. Since audiences continue to support them, found footage films are the closest thing to box office arbitrage that exists in Hollywood these days. Project X is the latest of these and also one of the cleverest in terms of concept.

All of us have that fantasy as teenagers that we will throw the ultimate party, the one that will become a local legend for years to come. Project X is that premise come to (fictional) life as a bunch of unpopular teens celebrate a birthday by advertising a party on Craigslist. The results are predictable as strangers from miles away arrive and overwhelm a single home.

There isn't much to the plot here nor will a film created for $12 million involve any known stars. That's the point. This is a decidedly low budget affair intended to create a hashtag buzz. It is all but impossible to lose money and will probably prove to be one of the strongest returns on investment of all 2012 releases. (David Mumpower/BOP)

Visionary director Terry Gilliam brings to the screen a tale of a young girl left to her own devices who deals with the world as best she can.

Tideland tells the story of Jeliza-Rose, whose mother has died from a drug overdose and whose father, a former rockabilly guitarist, withdraws from life and from his daughter in the aftermath of his wife's tragic death. Moved by her father to her mother's childhood home in the country, Jeliza-Rose makes the world over into a fantasyland where bodiless Barbie doll heads talk, fireflies have proper names, bog-men prowl the land at dusk, sharks swim along the railroad tracks, and something is making awful noises in the attic. Besides the creatures that inhabit her fantasy world, Jeliza-Rose has found a human friend to keep her company, a neighbor woman called Dell who lives her life shrouded behind a beekeeper's veil.

Tideland is a story of loss and survival, of using fantasy to make sense of an often-too-harsh world, of keeping hold of the best of childhood whilst still learning to deal with the trials that life presents on the path to the future. Brought to life by Terry Gilliam, a director who has shown an amazing ability to blend fantasy and reality in equal measures to create a film world that both entrances and delves into the deeper emotions that exist at the heart of the best movies. Gilliam has consistently been able to exist outside the sometimes too-restrictive Hollywood studio system and keep his film visions pure, and whether you love or hate Gilliam - and there doesn't seem to be any between-ground in opinion - it is difficult to deny that Gilliam is a filmmaker of rare insight and commitment to his filmic themes. Tideland promises to be yet another ripping great yarn from this distinctive auteur, and is definitely a project to keep on the radar for all those who enjoy unique movies that eschew the cookie-cutter, safe Hollywood path for the cinematic road less traveled. Some comic books have self-explanatory premises. There is a Wonder Woman, a Superman, an Iron Man and (apparently) a Punisher. That last guy likes to punish people. Like I said, it's right there in the title how he spends his days. He's like a career hockey goon but with better artillery than a curved stick.

In 2004, Marvel Studios - in conjunction with Lionsgate - created a movie about this character starring Thomas Jane. The results were disappointing. Despite affording viewers the opportunity to see John Travolta get his ass kicked on camera, viewers paid the Punisher little attention. The $33 million production earned only $33.7 million worth of receipts. Apparently, a man clad in a skull-and-crossbones t-shirt is not that much of a draw sans the right marketing strategy. This should have been the end of the story for The Punisher as a movie concept.

Over the past couple of years, Marvel Studios has decided to finance their own productions. The idea is that they eliminate the dreaded studio notes that wind up stripping good ideas out of movies, making them the most generic output possible. Marvel has always prized the Punisher as a character, feeling that he is a darker take on the idea of DC's Batman: a bringer of vengeance with the principal difference being that he will take a life, unlike his DC counterpart. Action heroes like this are always en vogue, particularly on the home video market. In fact, it was primarily DVD sales of the original that drove Marvel to do another Punisher movie. People weren't willing to pay to see it in theaters, but they were willing to give it a chance at home.

So, Marvel requested a script from Kurt Sutter of The Shield in 2007. Over the three years prior to that, Thomas Jane had been telling fans of the comic books that another movie was in the works and that he would be once more portraying the lead. After Sutter's screenplay was submitted, Jane's tone changed. Indicating dissatisfaction with the production delays and the quality of the shooting script, the actor dropped out of the project. Almost immediately afterward (suspiciously quickly, in fact), Ray Stevenson aka Titus Pullo from HBO's Rome was brought onboard in the title role.

Marvel announced that the new Punisher movie would have nothing to do with the previous entry. Rather than create a sequel, they would do exactly the same thing as was done with The Hulk/The Incredible Hulk. They would acknowledge a previous mistake and move on. Dominic West of 300 was added to the cast as the principal villain, Jigsaw, Hooligans director and accomplished martial interest Lexi Alexander was hired to direct, and all the pieces seemed to be in place for a quiet shoot. After filming ended, however, Sutter requested that his name be removed from the writing credits, claiming that the movie Alexander filmed bore little resemblance to the one he wrote. A script Thomas Jane hadn't felt was up to snuff had been butchered to the point that its own writer wanted nothing to do with it. That's probably not a good sign.

BOP's staff loves Titus Pullo and we think his presence in a violent action film could be glorious. We also love Dominic West from The Wire and believe him to be a potentially great villain. We just worry about the fact that The Punisher was not a good movie yet its star found this script lacking. Then, the guy who wrote said script washed his hands of it. And oh yeah, the movie was delayed three months to December, not exactly the best time to be releasing a film whose body count may reach Nakatomi Building levels. We have no idea exactly what is going on with Punisher: War Zone, but we are starting to get a bad feeling about it. (David Mumpower/BOP)
